Weeks 5-8: Composition Framework Development

Hi there, I’m Leon. For the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping students overcome their struggles with Chinese—transforming challenges into achievements. Growing up in an English-speaking household in Singapore, my earliest encounters with Chinese were mixed with both wonder and difficulty.
My journey wasn’t always smooth. From feeling overwhelmed during recitations in class to struggling through junior college exams, every setback taught me that there had to be a better way to learn Chinese. It wasn’t until I discovered the vibrant world of Mandopop—where artists like Jay Chou and Stefanie Sun turned language learning into an immersive, emotional experience—that I began to truly appreciate the rhythm and beauty of Chinese. I learned that language is not just about memorizing words; it’s about connecting with culture and emotion.
While my academic journey was full of ups and downs, I also embraced opportunities beyond the classroom. I challenged myself on national platforms, earning accolades in both MasterChef Singapore and SPOP! Wave, a Singapore Mandopop singing competition. These experiences allowed me to shine on TV in both English and Mandarin segments, reinforcing my belief that bilingual skills can open doors to unexpected and rewarding adventures.
Today, I channel my experiences into a teaching philosophy that combines structured, bilingual instruction with creative, culturally immersive methods. I believe that every student, regardless of their background, can learn to master Chinese with the right guidance and a bit of determination.
